official guide to finding a great nanny and keeping her

Parents and Concerned Citizens . . . Voice Your Opinion!

I am trying to get a law passed that would require nannies to be trained and certified, in the same way that day care workers are certified, in order to work as a nanny.

Anyone who believes that it is a good idea to have a law requiring Nannys to receive training before caring for our children, please sign the following petition. I will forward all names to the legislators. If you do not want to give your home address feel free to just give your state. For your privacy, this petition will go only to the proper lawmakers and all of your information will be held strictly confidential. Your information will not appear on this site, nor will I discuss it.

Why I feel this law is necessary . . .
Day care workers spend less time, on a daily basis, with children and are supervised. Nannys are not supervised. And yet, Day care workers are required to be certified, whereas nannys are not.

Where is the protection for our children? Video taping of nannys is illegal in some states. And even if it were not, the damage is already done by the time the parents have viewed the videotape.

It makes no sense to me that someone doing nails has to be licensed, but not those who care for children! There are already state run childcare certification programs in place in each state that would be easy to pass. Most of these programs are inexpensive and only meet one night a week. There are also nanny schools where a person could be trained for specific issues that nannys face. For more info go to www.nannyschool.com

Women come to this country from all over the world and work as nannys. Many of them don't speak English and have no training. In addition, most of them do not know our laws that involve child safety. For example, I have been to nanny discussions where most of the nannys did not know it is against the law to spank a child.

In addition, they work off the books and can make in some cases up to 92 thousand a year. At the very least a base pay starting salary for an untrained nanny with no skills is 400.00 a week. If a women pays money and spends time to be trained, she is less likely to abuse a child and more likely to give quality care. Required training and certification could be an answer to many of the issues parents face.

I have given seminars to parents on how to hire a nanny and 100% of them had no idea of what to look for. Most of them went by references and what they feel. If you were hiring a doctor, a secretary or a computer programmer what you feel would be the last thing you would look at. There are specific skills that a nanny should have to give quality care and training would ensure, in most cases, that a nanny has these. This would give a parent concrete criteria to look for rather than only using intuition.

I have done research and ALL of the girls who have been on the news the past 5 years have had GREAT references. None of them, however, had any training! There is an exam developed by the International Nanny Association, and is a step in the right direction. However, it does not ensure that a person who can pass a written exam will be able to handle pressure on a day to day basis. Nannys are faced daily with crying children and other issues that come up when working with children.

In my schooling, I have found that some women who do not pass nanny courses and childcare training programs, have a head knowledge but, do not have the ability to handle pressure. A good friend of mine consistently flunked our program because, although she loved children and most people considered her a professional with 20 years experience, her discipline methods were out of date and this was something she was unable to change.

These are a few of the reasons why I think training is essential.

If you agree that it is a good idea to get a law passed that would require someone who works as a nanny to have training, sign the following petition and I will forward it to the legislators. If you do not want to give your home address feel free to just give your state. To protect your privacy, your information will not be discussed by me or viewed by visitors to this web site.

Yes, I agree that Nanny training and certification should be required, in order to help protect our children, and I support legislation that will require such training.
